The T-72 is the Soviet/Russian main battle tank produced in greater numbers than almost any other; cheap, simple and widely exported, its 125 mm gun and autoloader make it the mass-armor backbone — and cannon fodder — of dozens of armies.

The T-72's value is numbers and cost, not protection: the modernized T-72B3 adds new fire control, optics and reactive armor, but the basic design's cast turret and carousel autoloader (with its catastrophic ammo-detonation risk) leave it exposed to modern top-attack weapons. In quantity it still matters; one-on-one against a modern MBT or ATGM it is outmatched.
