The Boxer is a modular 8×8 armored vehicle family that separates a common drive-module from mission-modules (APC/IFV/command/ambulance/artillery/air-defense) which can be swapped under field conditions in roughly one hour. It offers STANAG Level 4 all-around protection, Level 6 frontal protection (up to 30 mm) and high survivability; its weight-versus-cost balance makes it one of the most protected yet most expensive wheeled platforms in its class. With the SCHAKAL/RCT30 variant it carries the Puma turret onto a wheeled backbone.

The Boxer is the most protected wheeled platform in its class, but also one of the most expensive; its ~38 t weight and unit cost (about €4.5 billion for ~270 vehicles in the 2025 Germany–Netherlands deal) drag down its value score. The base vehicle is a backbone rather than an IFV; its combat power depends entirely on the fitted mission-module.
