The FIM-92 Stinger is an infrared-guided, shoulder-launched man-portable air-defense missile offering fire-and-forget capability against helicopters, low-flying aircraft, and UAVs. After Ukraine-driven demand, RTX restarted production, and the FIM-92J variant was enabled against small drones with a proximity fuze. Mature, cheap, and highly portable, but limited in range/altitude and confined to low-altitude targets.

The Stinger is strictly a low-altitude, short-range point-defense weapon; it is ineffective against jet aircraft outside the head-on aspect and at high altitude. Its real range is not the catalog ~8 km but about 4.8 km in practice. While the FIM-92J proximity fuze improves small-drone effectiveness, the cost-to-target ratio is criticized as expensive (hundreds of thousands of dollars per drone).
