The P-8 Poseidon is a Boeing 737-based multimission maritime patrol and anti-submarine (MPA/ASW) aircraft; with 129 sonobuoys, AN/APY-10 radar, Mk 54 torpedoes and Harpoon it both finds and kills sub-surface and surface threats — the backbone of Western submarine hunting.

Highly capable but expensive (~150-175 M$ per aircraft) and, as a big jet, it does most ASW work from high altitude via sonobuoys and the HAAWC torpedo glide kit. The magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) was dropped on later blocks, so detection leans on acoustics and radar. As a large, undefended platform it operates over open ocean, not inside contested air defense.
