U.S. medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) hunter-killer armed/reconnaissance UAV — heavy payload, powerful EO/IR sensor, and Hellfire/Paveway capacity make it the larger, costlier and longer-ranged counterpart to the TB2.
Specifications
- Class: MALE hunter-killer UAV
- Payload: ~1,746 kg total (~1,360 kg external, 7 stations)
- Range: ~1,850 km (operational; ferry ~1,000 nm)
- Endurance: ~27 hours (40+ hours with external tanks)
- Ceiling: ~15,240 m (50,000 ft)
- Speed: ~370 km/h cruise (240 mph)
- Sensor: MTS-B EO/IR + laser + Lynx SAR/GMTI radar
- Armament: 8× AGM-114 Hellfire / GBU-12 Paveway / GBU-38 JDAM
Beats: Zırhlı / topçu / yumuşak hedef (hassas Hellfire/Paveway vuruşu), Uzun süreli ISR · takip · av (eski/küçük sınıf SİHA'lardan ağır yük + üstün EO/IR sensör), Hava savunmasız / izole birlikler ve ayaklanma-karşıtı hedefler
Loses to: Modern SAM / SHORAD — S-300/S-400, Pantsir-S1, HQ-9 (Yemen'de Husi SAM'larıyla çok sayıda kayıp), Avcı / 4.5-5. nesil — Su-35, J-10C (yavaş, manevrasız, düşük hayatta-kalırlık; Karadeniz'de Rus avcısı bir MQ-9'u düşürdü), Gelişmiş EW / GPS-data-link karıştırma (uydu bağı kesilince körleşir)
Shares the same vulnerability as the TB2 but at a higher price: slow and non-maneuvering, so it cannot survive against modern air defense — between 2023 and 2025 the Houthis in Yemen claimed to have shot down ~15+ MQ-9s (~$30M each; not confirmed by the U.S.). Its strong payload/sensor advantage is offset by high cost and low survivability; it is an expensive target in front of layered SAM/SHORAD.
