The Buk-M3 (9K317M "Viking", NATO: SA-27) is the most advanced member of Almaz-Antey's Buk family. With its 9M317M missile it reaches a range of 70 km and an altitude of 35 km; each TELAR carries six canisterized missiles instead of four and can engage 36 targets simultaneously. It fills the medium tier between the Pantsir (point defense) and the S-400 (long range). It is advertised against targets up to Mach 8.8, yet in 2025 numerous TELARs and radars were destroyed by drone strikes in Ukraine.

The 70 km / Mach 8.8 figures and the 'F-35/F-22 detection' claims are largely manufacturer marketing; in practice, performance against stealth and ballistic targets is more limited. On the 2025 Ukrainian battlefield, Buk-M3 TELARs and radars were repeatedly destroyed by cheap drone/FPV attacks (unit cost ~$40-50M); this exposed the vulnerability of a medium-tier SAM, lacking its own point defense, to the modern drone threat.
