The M1A2 SEPv3 is the most mature Western upgrade of the 1980s-era Abrams hull: a 1,500 hp Honeywell AGT1500 gas turbine, 120mm M256 smoothbore (M829A4 kinetic and AMP multipurpose rounds), improved FLIR optics, an ammunition data link, and integration into joint command networks. The optional Trophy active protection system defeats ATGMs and rockets. However, its ~66.8-ton weight, the gas turbine's fuel/logistics burden, and top-attack/drone vulnerability have exposed its limits in modern combat.

The tanks sent to Ukraine were older M1A1SA, not SEPv3; SEPv3 turret-roof armor is the same as the M1A1's, so the top-attack lesson still applies. Trophy APS is optional, not standard, and is not fitted to every tank. Sources vary on service entry (~2017 first deliveries / 2020 unit fielding).
