The Type 45 Daring class is one of the world's most capable area air-defence destroyers. Fed by the SAMPSON multi-function AESA radar and the S1850M long-range radar, its Sea Viper (PAAMS) system with Aster 15/30 missiles can track more than 2,000 targets and counter many simultaneous attacks at once. In 2025-2026 it is being strengthened with a BMD upgrade, a Sea Ceptor add-on and the DragonFire laser.

The Type 45 is a globally respected air-defence platform, but the honest limit is this: with only 48 primary VLS cells (versus the 96-128 of US/Japanese/Korean destroyers) and a limited strike/ASW load, it is a narrowly specialised shield whose multi-role flexibility and missile depth are weak. Early WR-21 power failures are being fixed under the PIP. Only six ships were built and the unit cost is high (~GBP 1 billion+), which drags down its value score. True BMD via Sea Viper Evolution is still a work in progress within the NATO framework.
