The Type 214 is an air-independent propulsion (AIP) diesel-electric attack submarine that Germany's TKMS/HDW developed purely for export. It marries the hull design of the Type 209 with the PEM fuel-cell technology of the Type 212A, letting it stay silently submerged for up to three weeks without snorkeling. In service with Greece, Portugal, South Korea and Türkiye, and selected by India, it is the most successful conventional export submarine of its class.

The Type 214 is a conventional (non-nuclear) submarine: it is extremely potent in coastal and regional waters, but it lacks the indefinite submerged endurance, global reach and land-attack missile capacity of nuclear SSNs. The scores are set within the overall framework of all submarines rather than inside the SSK class alone — which is why range and impact sit at a moderate level. Its AIP fuel cell makes it one of the quietest boats of its class.
