The Su-25 Grach is the Soviet/Russian counterpart to the A-10: a rugged, cheap, subsonic armored close air support aircraft built around a titanium "bathtub" cockpit. With a twin-barrel 30mm GSh-30-2 cannon, 10 hardpoints and a ~4,400 kg payload, it was designed as a low-altitude tank and armor hunter. The Su-25SM3 variant adds the SOLT-25 electro-optical sight, the Vitebsk-25 EW protection suite and glide-bomb integration; yet the saturation of MANPADS and SAMs in Ukraine is punishing its classic low-flying role.

The Su-25's titanium armor withstands hits up to 12.7mm and makes its survivability stand out in its class; but as proven in Ukraine, the saturation of MANPADS and SAMs has turned the classic low-altitude CAS tactic almost suicidal, forcing pilots into "loft bombing" that sacrifices accuracy. With no new production, every loss is irreplaceable; the SM3 upgrade (Vitebsk-25 EW + glide bombs) is a bridge solution that extends its service life without jumping a category.
