The KJ-500 is China's AEW&C aircraft on a Y-9 turboprop, carrying three fixed AESA arrays in a non-rotating dorsal disc for continuous 360° coverage — the workhorse early-warning node of the PLA Air Force.

The KJ-500 trades the size of a jet AWACS for numbers and cost: a turboprop platform produced in quantity, with three fixed AESA arrays giving gap-free 360° scanning. It is slower and lower-flying than jet-based AWACS, which limits radar horizon, but the volume of the fleet makes it the backbone of Chinese airborne early warning. The carrier-capable PLAN AEW is the separate KJ-600, not the KJ-500.
