The AIM-9X Sidewinder is the latest of the legendary short-range, infrared-guided dogfight missiles; a high-off-boresight imaging IR seeker plus thrust-vectoring lets a pilot lock and kill targets far off the nose, often cued by helmet sight.

The AIM-9X transformed close combat: paired with a helmet-mounted cueing system its imaging-IR seeker can engage targets at high off-boresight angles a pilot only needs to look at. Block II adds a datalink and lock-on-after-launch. Its short range is its limit — at distance the BVR missiles dominate, and modern IR countermeasures (flares/DIRCM) challenge it.
